This Mother's Day, We Honor Moms Who Fight Alongside Their Children

Mother’s Day is often celebrated with flowers and brunch. But for some moms, this day carries a deeper meaning — one that only those who have walked through fire can understand.

This Mother’s Day, we honor the moms who show up every single day in hospital rooms, in waiting areas, in the quiet hours of the night when fear is loudest. Moms like Andrew’s mother — whose two-year-old son is currently facing brain cancer.

The Weight of Wanting to Do More

“The hardest part has been feeling, in some moments, that I’m not giving 100% of myself. As a mom, you always want to be strong, to be present in everything, to hold, care for, and protect. But there are days when emotionally it’s hard, and that feeling weighs on your heart.”

“It’s also been very hard to watch him — being such a small child — go through such a complex process. Many times you wish all of this was happening to you and not to your child. Watching him fight, so little, facing so much… there’s no explanation for it.”

She’s not alone. Mothers are the primary caregivers in 70-80% of pediatric cancer cases. And 40-50% of parents of children with cancer report symptoms of post-traumatic stress — sometimes years after diagnosis.

Her Greatest Source of Strength

“On the hardest days, what gives me strength is seeing him. Andrew’s strength is something that holds me up even when I feel like I’m breaking or my world is falling apart.”

“Despite everything he’s been through, he smiles. He radiates joy, even in moments when he’s feeling low. Seeing him like that — with that light, with that ability to smile even in the midst of pain — pushes me to keep going. He, without knowing it, is my greatest source of strength.”

A Message to Another Mom

“To a mother who just heard the word cancer for the first time, I would say that even though the world seems to stop in that instant, it’s not the end.”

“Hold tightly to God’s hand. Have faith and trust every step of the process. Live day by day — don’t get ahead of tomorrow. Embrace the present. Enjoy every moment with your son or daughter as if it were the most valuable — because it is.”

“Faith and love are essential to keep going.”

Not Walking Alone

“ICCF’s support has made an enormous difference in our lives. In the middle of such a long, difficult, and uncertain process, they have been one of the few foundations that have truly been present for us outside the hospital.”

“They have been an important support system — offering us not only help but also emotional accompaniment through psychological support and constant attention to Andrew’s process.”

“This whole journey has been long, full of anguish and challenges. But having that support has made us feel like we’re not alone. And that, in moments like these, means everything.”

At Inner Compass Cancer Foundation, we believe cancer is more than a medical diagnosis — it affects the entire family. That’s why we provide support including financial relief, psychotherapy, and emotional care for patients and their loved ones.
