World Head and Neck Cancer Day

Every year on July 27, Head and Neck Cancer Day is observed around the world. It helps to raise awareness about the early detection of the tumors that affect the upper aerodigestive tract, but what exactly are head and neck cancers? They are not a single disease, but a broad category of malignancies, which represent about 4.5% of all cancer diagnoses worldwide. Although head and neck cancer poses a complex threat to vital bodily functions—like speaking and eating—, understanding its origins, primary risk factors, and modern treatments remains the most powerful tool to fight the disease.

Where the Disease Begins

To begin with, understanding where the disease originates and how it is classified is essential. According to Cleveland Clinic, these cancers primarily originate in the cellular lining of the upper aerodigestive tract; they invade local tissues and compromise the patient’s ability to swallow, speak, breathe, and even form facial expressions (2024). Hence, healthcare providers classify the vast majority of these cases as head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC). Moreover, they can be classified based on the specific anatomical structures where they develop: oral cancer, salivary gland cancer, and laryngeal cancer (where the voice box is located) are just a few.

Main Risk Factors

Equally important, the primary risk factors of head and neck cancers include substance abuse, viral infections, and personal circumstances. Historically, HNSCC has been driven primarily by tobacco use and heavy alcohol consumption (Cleveland Clinic, 2024). However, in recent decades, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is “overtaking tobacco use as the greatest risk factor associated with head and neck cancer” (Cleveland Clinic, 2024). Additional risks include betel nut chewing in some Asian regions, a chronic exposure to carcinogens, and a weakened immune system due to viruses or genetics.

Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention

It is important to emphasize that, if left untreated, cancer cells can metastasize, invading nearby lymph nodes in the neck, and eventually spread to other organs such as the lungs. Therefore, early diagnosis, effective treatment, and preventive practices are essential to improve patient outcomes. Diagnosis combines physical examination, endoscopy, imaging, and biopsy, while treatment depends on the cancer’s stage and location and may involve surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy. Furthermore, many cases can be prevented by avoiding tobacco, limiting alcohol consumption, receiving the HPV vaccine, and maintaining good oral hygiene (Cleveland Clinic, 2024).

Why Early Detection Matters

Head and neck cancer can severely affect the patient’s speech, eating, and breathing, making early detection especially important. Thus, prevention through healthy lifestyle choices, vaccination, and prompt medical attention can significantly reduce its impact; as stated in the Cleveland Clinic webpage, “the earlier it’s caught and treated, the better your chances of getting rid of the cancer for good” (2024). With greater awareness and access to prevention and treatment, we can continue reducing the burden of head and neck cancer worldwide.
