"The energy with which we do anything in life stems from our belief systems; and energy is everything."
Belief is the 3rd pillar of transformation. The typical belief system that surrounds cancer is quite grim and disempowering. We may take extra efforts to improve our health, but if belief is not truly behind the actions taken, we won’t maximize our potential because the intention will be weak and tainted by fear and doubt from the beginning.
However, once empowered by a vision that gives us a reason to believe in the body’s ability to self-heal, we are no longer driven by fear and doubt. Instead love fills all our thoughts, emotions and actions because we now realize that even though cancer is a serious condition that requires immediate attention, we know exactly what is required to face this challenge. Where we previously felt lost and unable to impact the results of our health, we now feel in control once again.
Even modern medicine recognizes the power of belief in what they refer to as the placebo effect. We think the placebo effect is just another way of saying “not real” or “all in your head”, but the science of epi-genetics tells us that the placebo effect is actual very real and extremely powerful.
To highlight just how real and powerful the placebo effect is, there have been numerous studies that show how people experience real physical impacts of a placebo that is as effective, and sometimes even more effective than those who received actual physical interventions. One example is a study that performed arthroscopic surgery on patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. The patients who received a placebo surgery (put under anesthetic and received an identical incision as the actual procedure) experienced the same improvements to their knee pain as those who received the actual surgery.
Another example is a Japanese study that investigated patients highly allergic to poison ivy. Each participant was exposed to poison ivy on one arm (and told it was a harmless plant) and on the other arm exposed to a harmless plant (and told it was poison ivy). Surprisingly, all who were exposed to the harmless plant but told it was poison ivy received the skin reaction. Even more surprisingly, only a fraction of patients received a skin reaction to the actual poison
ivy because they were told it was harmless.
If these studies demonstrate just how powerful our mind is on a physiological level, then what else can be told about our beliefs as they relate to the outcomes experienced in cancer? The answer is quite a lot. It has been said that all our cells are secretly eavesdropping on our thoughts. If our thoughts are telling us that cancer is a mystery to modern medicine and extremely improbable to overcome, then how do the cells of our body respond to that? The answer to that question is revealed by the common drop off in health just after people receive their cancer prognosis.
Given this new knowledge about the power of belief, we need to take extra care about the messages we’re receiving from others. When we begin to take control of our health and start to care for ourselves above and beyond the standard of care, we are likely to encounter skepticism, and sometimes even judgment. It is up to us how to respond. We must not allow this to incite doubt and fear into our journey. Advice may come from the best of intentions. Still, we can understand that many are not aware of our newfound knowledge and wisdom, and instead be grateful for the well-meaning advice.
When our beliefs are in alignment with empowered vision, our intention and focus on the task at hand is unwavering. And whether we accept the power of our beliefs or not, the cells in our body will respond to the genuine hopefulness we now feel. And as for the results of our efforts and good intentions?
